I got my mom a roku so she can watch Hulu & netflix when she's traveling.
I think rokus make great gifts!

If I were going to take a guess, I'd say the Roku Express is aimed at taking a bite out of the Amazon Fire Stick market. I recently needed to buy a second Amazon Fire Stick, for a second TV, and mildly entertained the idea of getting a Roku, until I saw they were twice the price. Maybe functionality is better and that's the reason for the price difference, but for me, I know a Fire Stick would suffice for the purposes I needed, so there was no point in looking at additional features for a greater cost. If I'd seen a Roku similarly priced to the Fire Stick, I probably would have checked it out.

Sure, there's a chicken&egg problem with these new video standards, so someone has to start offering the features or else we'd all be stuck with 480p video. We're looking at a future without headphone jacks, so maybe we're moving well beyond HDMI cables, too.... :P

I agree. Roku has a mature OS and channel market. If I needed to replace my existing Roku devices, I would buy an express. I think the Roku Express would be a great gift.

I was in Best Buy yesterday and noticed that they have a large selection of UHD discs. I didn't even know that those existed and I would defitnitely be wary of upgraging for a few years, especially with what happened with HDDVDs.
