Amazon is my favorite website to buy things from so them wanting to get involved with Pay TV is great and I wish them all the happiness.

batye - I think Amazon is growing a little under the radar. Most of the attention is being grabbed by Netflix, while Amazon slowly goes about its business. I would say that Netflix is probably ahead of Amazon in terms of both UI/UX and video quality -- not to mention subscribers -- but I wonder if Amazon is playing the long game. The company has deep pockets and higher ARPU (if you add in the e-commerce bump from Prime) so it knows it can wait out much of the competition.

@Adi that does make sense, considering that Netflix was and is all about video content, in contrast to Amazon that has a lot more going on.

@Adi I think Amazon is playing the long game with its Prime membership. They seem to be adding new features or more content all the time. Have you seen the Amazon stores? You can get one day delivery to an Amazon store with Prime. I think faster shipping coupled with original content and add-on channels is a good way to keep customers hooked into the Amazon ecosystem.

Canada, though, is I believe part of the G20--and I am confident that Amazon understands that--when they go after a leading E-Tailer in the Middle East (as I noted during my previous comments), I think they know they need to take care of Canada.

One interesting example of this transformation is what's going on over at Verizon.  During my morning"review", I saw that verizon is consolidating AOL and Yahoo into a new umbrella brand called "Oath".   That's an interesting name that I would imagine would resonate--and on top of the streaming service upcoming, fun to be witness to.....

Re: Amazon is the Best
I don't quite understand the "Oath" re-branding... does that mean AOL email and Yahoo email accounts are going to change domain names? I would assume not... so how far does the "Oath" brand go?

I'd also wonder how Oath would replace Yahoo News or other Yahoo properties that bring in eyeballs in the gazillions....

I can understand why the AOL branding should be dropped -- people already think of AOL as some ancient company that only grandparents use... but Yahoo is still at least somewhat still used by some younger users, no? Maybe not...

It looks like Yahoo and AOL branding isn't going away, but certain things will be brought under a unified new brand. That sounds reasonable. I wonder what happens to things like Flickr and Tumblr still.

@Michelle - I think you're 100% correct. Amazon doesn't have to focus everything on their OTT service - though it is really a pretty decent one - because they have other areas to get revenue from. I myself was a prime member for the shipping long before I ventured over to see what they had in their video selection. Now I've purchased more kids shows from them than I care to think about, added the HBO Channel to my subscription and we're on Amazon more than any other OTT service. (They have Wild Kratts!) And any time my kids aren't fighting over what show we should watch, I'm a happy camper. :-)

I'm curious to see how Wamart's push to compete with Amazon is going to pan out.  They've made a big push advertising push for their 2-day free shipping recently and now they've swallowed up Moosejaw (Outdoor retail) in an effort to boost their online sales.

@Michelle - Amazon was responsible for something like 46% of all online sales in 2016 - that speaks volumes.  If someone can up-the-ante even just a little bit, there's a lot of money to be made by taking that market share.

Agree!  I feel like sheer selection is where they have everyone beat.  I can't think of much that I could not find on the site.  It's one-stop shopping at its finest.

However, they did get into some sort of pricing squable with P&G over Pampers and suddenly the brand was removed for a time.  Seems like a "My way or the highway situation."

Not sure I would trust Amazon even though they say they work with everybody...

Even in the content space, the company is taking talent from traditional studios to pay less for content overall. You've got to be careful with this company, it competes with a lot of existing businesses.

Re: Amazon is the Best
dcawrey - That probably is the long term plan, it's how big retailers work, from Walmart to Amazon -- their vendors get massive reach, but have to really squeeze margins if they want to work with them.

But today, I'm not sure Amazon is in a position to squeeze content producers. With Netflix throwing huge sums around for original content, but also channels like AMC, HBO and others, it's tough to push too hard. Certainly Amazon paid a bucket load more for The Grand Tour ($5.6 per episode) than the BBC did for Top Gear, essentially the same show. And of course, that includes production values, locations etc., but pretty sure Jeremy Clarkson made out like a bandit on the contract.

Amazon is right in focusing on QoE for users as that can't be ignored. As an online retail company, forming partnerships with pay-TV companies is probably not a top priority. The company has a lot going for it without it being in the OTT business.
