Re: More Hiring for Positions
@Ariella - It drives me up a WALL that literally every single job I have had since I was a teenager at some point has cut back labor, and demanded everyone work harder - with zero incentive to do so other than keeping your job. My fast food jobs did this, my corporate jobs did this, even my teaching jobs have done this. Though I do admit it was the worst in the fast food jobs. Because customers don't know or care that your boss decided to cut the schedule down and leave you short handed to increase their profit. Forcing you to work twice as hard - and if you fail you don't just have your boss to answer to, a lot of customers will give you a piece of their mind too. There is not nearly enough credit given to anyone working fast food.

Re: More Hiring for Positions
I have to think you're on the right track with this line of thinking. I've heard since the internet has really come into play for job applications hiring managers are inundated with people applying and that some will cut out resumes for ridiculous reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with your skill and everything to do with their complete inability to actually look at every resume that comes in. Making impossible qualifications with a few key words can easily help lower the number of resumes to review. If you insist that they have experience in what is generally two different positions, you're going to throw a bunch of resumes out from the start if they don't have both sets of key words in their resumes. Then suddenly you have a far more manageable section of resumes to sort through.

Re: More Hiring for Positions
There always seems to be an information imbalance between management and unions when it comes to projections of how a business is doing. Maybe capitalism need to come up with better ways to organize businesses and management structures....

@mhhf1ve that puts me in the mind of the MTA that always seems to raise rates on the grounds of a shortfall only to find a surplus when bonus time comes up.

Yes, it's a disturbing trend, but short of enacting laws like France to limit the working hours in a week, I don't think there's really a way to prevent it or stop it?

Well, no rewards for the employees -- but I'm sure there are bonuses for upper management for keeping overhead low.... :P

Re: More Hiring for Positions
@Michelle Yes, it's a real problem when employees are constantly told to make do with less. There's a certain point at which it becomes impossible to keep up. Also there are no rewards (beyond the temporary assurance of keeping the job) for increasing productivity to that extent.

Re: More Hiring for Positions
That is a likely motivation. I see it in the workplace. The job of 3 or 4 people is often given to one or two. It's not working. Morale is quite low for folks performing the job of mulitple people like this...
