I would humbly suggest that they were late into the game as the rise of Pebble clearly shows. Anything The Watch can do, the Pebble can do--and you may recall Apple wa snot approving Pebble's App for a little while. I think the NFC Ring (another wearable I am evaluating) will also suffer the same faith. Not so sure that the Pebble can do everything the Apple Watch can... but the things the Pebble can't do that the Apple Watch can are probably not really worth doing right now. You can't send haptic messages to other people wearing a Pebble -- but who does that anyway? Pebble and Apple Watch are still like Newtons and Handspring and Palm Pilots.. not quite ready for mainstream adoption. Sure, there are some tech early adopters who think these are great gadgets, but these things aren't like iPods or iPads. Toddlers and grandparents aren't going to really see the point in wearing a smartwatch right now. Maybe in a few years when the smartwatches have better wireless services and don't need to connect to phones? Palm did hold its' own for quite some time until Compaq Figured out a way to transform it with the iPAQ..right? The older ones are an "extension" of the Phone--it is when the wearable becomes standalone then we have an opportunity to truly live up to what was envisioned in Star Trek. Let's stay hopeful. They just aren't capturing users' attention...but if the advances that you mention were to come to pass, maybe more people would be keen to buy and wear a watch again. I can definitely say that I'm not ready yet...
