Re: Rebranding... or De-branding?
It does seem like a lot of effort to re-brand. I could see it more if something was somewhat of a failure

@Mike: Good point.

Agree with you somewhat but not in all cases is re-branding great deal of effort. I have heard some stories of re-branding. Companies come up with a new product, if that is not well received then a team of analysts get into action with findings about what didn't work. Then product development team gets into action by filling all those gaps and also puts all missing pieces together. BINGO - they have a new product and that now has a new name / brand.

Re: Name Change
What I suspect will happen is people continue to call it Chromecast anyway sheerly out of habit.

Obviously not the same situation but things like this kind of make me think about how Radio Shack decided to loose the Radio and just call themselves "The Shack."  The big difference though was Radio Shack sales were in the basement at the time.

Re: Name Change
@batye - I was unware of that!  The Source has much better connotations than "The Shack" which sounds like a run-down hole-in-the-wall you wouldn't want to go to unless desperate!

Re: Name Change
Good point!

Yes, I wonder that too. I do think it was a good idea to branch out that Google name. Just because it's so recognizable.

Re: Name Change
Yes, agreed!

That's why I think it's such a smart move on their part. Like you said, people who aren't up to date with the new advances wouldn't know or at least recognize their old name, but when they incorporate the Google name into it, it captures the consumer.

Continued confusion
They may have rebranded but it doesn't help them better describe the product offering. They're still calling the audio casting device Chromecast Audio. I think they may end up changing names yet again to better differentiate the products...

@ms.akkineni They don't even seem to have much information up on their site currently. I'm interested in seeing what they do as well!

Re: Name Change
@dlr5288 I agree. I'm interested to see how they use it to leverage the google name for branding on the general consumer end, and how they leverage the company's resources (human & financial) as they branch into new areas. I think my initial impression was that it was going to be more granular (e.g., browser, OS, apps, hardware), but now I'm wondering if it is more industry related (e.g., health, transportation)
