Re: a content platform for every show
> "teasing comments about plans for AppleTV.."

Apple has been teasing big plans for a TV strategy for... over a decade now?

At this point, Apple has seriously cried "wolf" too many times for AppleTV.. and content owners are probably far too cautious about negotiating with Apple, after seeing how Apple dominated the music and ebooks industries. AppleTV doesn't have the same dominance as the iPhone/iPod did/does, so Apple doesn't have the same leverage.

On top of that, it doesn't look like Apple wants to data mine user data for marketing purposes. So Apple's value to copyright holders is limited compared to Amazon/Google/etc.

Apple is in a tough spot in that it has to compete with the likes of Google AND at the same time try to be friendly with app developers like Netflix.

I think Apple might be better off trying to turn AppleTV into a casual gaming console first...

Re: a content platform for every show
Apple does streaming music.. and I think some streaming music videos, too. I don't think it has a streaming video service YET. But considering that all the major streaming video players run on Apple hardware (eg. Netflix app, Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, Hulu, etc), Apple is a potential player in streaming video because it just need to flick a switch and all iOS devices would be able to stream an iTunes video service.

Apple is in a tricky spot, though, competing with the streaming apps in its own app store and trying to offer the same service itself. Apple Music is in the same tough spot but at least it started with a dominant position in music downloads. Streaming music apps are on uncertain ground, though, because their future is much less certain than Netflix or Hulu. Will Pandora exist in few years? Will Spotify?

Apple might be starting to create some original programming for video... we'll see how that goes. Content production ain't easy.

Original content is a driver of subscriptions for sure. Netflix has executed this to perfection: With series like House of Cards, they have a banner to fly to get peiople in the door.

I would argue Amazon hasn't quite been able to accomplish that yet. But there is still time for the company, and they have the financial muscle to flex, that's for sure.

@mhhf1ve My understanding of Apple TV is that it is only giving convenient access to the programming from providers like HBO NOW, WatchESPN, Netflix, Hulu, iTunes. It doesn't seem to be planning its own. If it operated like Amazon, though, it would be building on the data of what people watch to figure out what it most marketable.

@mhhf1ve yes, many gamers would buy into idea of Apple tv as a gaming consule, and it would make great sense as long as Apple allow other non Apple controllers to get connected to Apple tv....

Re: a content platform for every show
@dcawrey - Original content is definitely a driver. As a parent, I actually enjoy that both Netflix and Amazon have a decent variety of original kids shows to choose from too. And they are of really decent quality too. It's nice to be able to offer my kids a variety of shows. Even though they'll watch the same episodes of Paw Patrol over and over, they definitely don't pay as close attention once they've seen it a million times.
